The Last Word: Helen Walters, founder of shmuncki

baby clothes founder Helen Walters

Helen Walters is the founder of British-made luxury babywear brand shmuncki. She also doubles as Mum and resident taxi service to two young boys, living in West Dulwich.

How long have you lived in the area?

I’m originally from the North East, but have lived in West Dulwich for 15 years

What do you most value about the area you live in?

We are so lucky to have such wonderful parks here, as well as The Horniman Museum and The Picture Gallery. We’re never short of something to do locally.

What one thing would you change?

The traffic. It’s hideous around school times and I do spend a lot of time stuck in the car. I’m a big fan of LBC radio though, so it’s not all bad.

What’s your favourite place for a night out?

I love Lordship Lane for dinner and drinks, but my ultimate night out is Archer Street Wine bar in Soho with the girls. The waiters are all fabulous singers and get up on the tables to belt out a few classics. The cocktails aren’t bad either.

Where are you likely to be found on Saturday?

I love Brockwell Park. I like to spend Saturday doing something active with the kids, and the playground there is awesome (I have tried out the zip wire so I speak from experience)

What is your favourite place to eat?

We love Joanna’s in Crystal Palace. Especially if we can bag the booth, which is a private little area that reminds me of a railway carriage. The food is consistently wonderful and they are great with the children. The chef always manages to pop by too and say hi to my boys.

Coffee or tea? Where?

I am a self-confessed coffee addict and absolutely cannot start my day without a visit to Starbucks on Dog Kennel Hill. It rounds off my school run and the staff there are so lovely I always end up having a chat.

What’s your favourite place to go for a drink?

The Rosendale Pub is walking distance for us, so it’s great to pop in for a glass of wine. They have a lovely outside play area too, so lounging about in the garden on a warm afternoon is a guilty pleasure when I have the time.

The best kept secret…

Therapy on Melbourne Grove. Just the most wonderful place to go for a relaxing massage. The girls can also work miracles on my eyebrows!

What is your favourite shop?

The Dulwich Trader is a real treasure. Plus with a gorgeous clothes section, if you can’t find something for the house or the kids, you can always find something for yourself!

The book I’m reading at the moment..

I love books and usually have a few on the go at the same time. I’m part of a local book group and we just finished The Minaturist which I loved. Make sure you’ve got your hankies for ending though.
